As described in Manual for the Soul, A Guide to the Energies of Life, the 260 day cycle that forms the foundation for the Mayan Calendar is comprised of 20 trecenas (weeks), each containing 13 days. Within Mayan Calendrics each of the days represents a unique energy with a special meaning. Each of the trecenas has a theme, with the name of the trecena being reflective of the first day of the time frame.
Having passed the Tun Shift point that saw the Maya Calendar’s Long Count click over to 12.19.19.0.0 on 8 Ajaw last week, the count-down to the end of the Great Cycle of Maya time is definitely picking up speed. With the first day of 2012 being 13 Chikchan 13 K’ank’in, in the Maya year 13 Eb’ at the beginning of the Gregorian year that ends the 13th B’aktun of the Maya Calendar we are reminded that a great deal of emphasis is being placed on Transformation at this time. Perhaps Comet Lovejoy’s magnificent display in the Southern Hemisphere during the past few days was heralding something of importance?
As it turns out, the first trecena of this important year presents an opportunity to “return to basics”. This is the Kimi trecena, with its theme of “returning to basic foundations” as the starting point for regeneration. In accordance with the skeletal imagery that pertains to the first day of this timeframe, there is sometimes a “death” aspect or an “acknowledgement of ancestors” aspect to this energy, as seen in August of 2005 when 55,000 people gathered in Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial park to observe a moment of silence and offer prayers for peace on the One Kimi day that marked the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. It was a One Kimi day in November of 2009 when Roland Emmerich released his “2012” movie, with its ominous apocalyptic images of hypothetical cataclysmic events associated with this year – a film that unquestionably frightened legions of people, many of whom may be facing this year with great trepidation as they wonder if this, or any of the other doom-oriented “prophesies” associated with this year, might be foreshadowing some kind of catastrophic end-to-everything. While we can be sure that, as in every year that has ever been or ever will be, there will be catastrophic events this year, there is nothing in any Mayan prophesy that indicates the kind of doomsday scenarios that have been sensationalized in films such as this, or in other “day of reckoning” types of proposals.
As we can see in the evidence of other events of significance that have occurred within the context of this trecena, events of a calamitous nature have occurred under this energy influence, as in the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand in 1914, that precipitated World War I, one of the largest wars in history. In 1989 this trecena brought forth the Exxon Valdez oil tanker spill off the coast of Alaska, one of the world’s most devastating human-caused environmental disasters. In 2010 the horrific cave-in at a copper and gold mine in Chile that left 33 miners trapped nearly 2300 ft. underground occurred within this timeframe, as did the massive flooding in Pakistan that displaced three million people. Last year a number of large tornado outbreaks occurred during this trecena, as seen when a massive EF4 tornado struck near St. Louis, Missouri turning many areas into disaster zones.
Nevertheless, as this is a highly “foundational” type of energy sequence, the genesis point for regeneration, there is much evidence to show how type of influence has manifested, as seen in the signing of the Treat of Versailles between Germany and the Allies in 1919, after the conclusion of World War I. In 2012 another battle came to an end when the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was finally “killed” under the influence of this energy. During the last appearance of this energy, in April, 2011, massive anti-government protest demonstrations began erupting in areas such as Yemen, Libya, Morocco, Syria, and other places in the Middle East, as the foundations for the “Arab Spring” significantly began to take shape. For royal watchers this trecena had a highly anticipatory tone to it this past April as preparations were being made for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. That spectacular event took place on the final day of the trecena at the same time as some of the largest anti-government demonstrations ever staged were unfolding in Middle Eastern regions.
As reflected by many of these events, much of the energy associated with this 13 day period revolves around the idea of letting go of restrictions so that restoration and renewal can be initiated. Sometimes this involves stripping things down to the “bare bones” as the Kimi glyph suggests. A good metaphor, given the time of year, might be seen in the trees with their bare branches. Although things may look bleak and desolate at the moment in many parts of the northern hemisphere we know that those trees contain within themselves all that is needed for a magnificent blossoming as soon as some solar warmth returns. So this would be a great time to clean out whatever is not wanted or needed, to give concerted thought to what IS wanted, and to set up new foundations for what you want to bring into your life. During this time frame these are the energies that will come into play (days of particular importance are highlighted in red):
1 Kimi (Jan. 2nd) – the “initiation” of “death/return to Source”, the beginning of the trecena. This is the birth energy of Frederick Catherwood, the extraordinary artist who accompanied John Lloyd Stephens on his lengthy explorations of Central America, Chiapas, and the Yucatan in the early 19th century. Catherwood’s exquisite drawings, published along with Stephens’ tales of their journeys, helped to inform the world of the existence of once-great civilizations in that part of the world. His imagery helped to lay the “foundations” for opening up this realm for others to explore.
2 Manik’(Jan. 3rd) – a dynamic type of energy aligned with the idea of reciprocity; third phase of Egypt’s parliamentary elections gets underway
3 Lamat (Jan. 4th) – the “activation” of the “bright star” heralding energy, aligned with leadership; this day will dawn with the peaking of the Quadrantids meteor shower, which will begin the night before; the completion of the third phase of Egypt’s parliamentary elections is also scheduled for this day
4 Muluk (Jan. 5th) – a “defining” day associated with the shape-shifting energy of water; in 2008 this energy brought forth the catastrophic flooding that inundated farmlands and some 3,000 homes in the Cedar Rapids area of Iowa; in 2010 this was the day that started the shut-down of the flow to the BP oil spill
5 Ok (Jan. 6th) – the “blessing of love”, also associated with fire, protection, guidance, and justice
6 Chuwen (Jan. 7th) – a “six directions” type of energy aligned with creativity and play, but sometimes associated with the unexpected, as when the EF4 tornado struck Missouri under this energy influence in April of 2011; something unexpected might also come along this time as this particular 6 Chuwen day coincides with the last day of the Maya “precious sun” month known as K’ank’in
7 Eb’ (Jan. 8th) – a “self-generating stream-of-consciousness” type of energy that correlates on this day with the “seating” or beginning of the Maya month known as Muwan, associated with the muwan owl that is also affiliated with the rain god and with the growing of maize; as this is also a revitalizing type of energy this is suggestive of a fertile “mid-point” to the trecena, perhaps a turning point towards the opening up of new possibilities
8 B’en (Jan. 9th) – the “resurrection” of personal authority; this comes 13 days after the 8 Ajaw Tun Shift that told the world about Comet Lovejoy
9 Ix (Jan. 10th) – an “outwardly projecting” type of energy often associated with deep mysteries, as reflected by the launch of the Kepler Telescope in 2009, on its mission to find Earth-like planets in other solar systems; events that take place under this influence can have long range implications
10 Men (Jan. 11th) – “foundational Higher Vision” – this is a Burner Day aligned with “taking the fire” in conjunction with the “high vision” of the Eagle; this is strong energy that has the potential to be quite explosive but can also open up far-reaching dimensions
11 Kib’ (Jan. 12th) – an energy that can be either change-oriented or “inspirational”, often aligned with shedding a kind of “first light” on things, as when the first proton-proton collisions recorded by the Large Hadron Collider took place under this influence in 2009; but as this follows 10 Men, and comes near the end of this Kimi trecena it can be temperamental, as happened the last time this energy appeared (in April 2011) when it brought some of the worst tornado outbreaks in decades to the south-central U.S.
12 Kab’an (Jan. 13th) – a “grouping together” type of energy associated with movement – specifically “Earth movement”; another powerful energy associated with moving new ideas forward, as when this influence accompanied the 1954 ruling that declared that public school segregation in the U.S. was unconstitutional, but this energy had brought forth major storms in recent years
13 Etz’nab’ (Jan. 14th) – “transformational flint”; a powerful energy that can be quite dazzling, as seen last year when the royal wedding in the U.K. drew the attention of millions of people around the globe; however, there is a strong “discrimination” aspect to this energy as its “knife edge” quality has the power to dramatically “shape” situations or bring something to a halt as when time was “rearranged” under this influence in 1582 as the Gregorian calendar came into effect in several European countries
